High fives, fist bumps, company clothing, cakes on birthdays, DQ treats – what GF business does this for their employees? White Water Truck Wash! The DAC started working at WWTW in November 2003. The owner, Craig Johnson sat behind me at church choir and I asked him if he would ever be interested in having us clean his business and the rest is history.
The job consists of cleaning five bathrooms, two offices, a drivers lounge and a set of stairs. The different job duties which include: sweeping, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, windows, and scrubbing stairs are done on a rotating basis so our clients learn all the job requirements. The skills which include patience, turn taking, cooperating with others, and responsibility are invaluable and will be with them their whole lifetime. It took a while to get the right crew but now there is a group of four gentlemen that have the routine down. They pretty much do the job with very little supervision – the job coach is mainly there to drive them back and forth and keep the supplies filled. Not to say that it has always been smooth sailing as there have been a few times when Craig has had to be “the heavy” in order to get a point across. But for the most part it has been a win/win situation for both parties.
The DAC has a Department of Labor Special Minimum wage certificate that allows us to pay our clients less than minimum wage as it is based on the individuals productivity, no matter how limited, in proportion to the wage and productivity of experienced workers performing the same tasks. These are called performance measurements and are done every five months on the various job tasks. Our clients are trained on the different job tasks in center before being given a community job. DAC staff provides on-going training on the job duties. Our clients are reliable, consistent, and very dedicated.
